We teach you 3 things - Where to look, When to look and What that information is telling you. The skill set you currently have doesn't apply as readily to Experimental Searey flying as it does to Certified aircraft. When you don't have tailwheel experience and are not rated for ASES and you are not familiar with high wing, pusher prop, short coupled aircraft...well, ask our student customers what they think about getting properly trained!
We've been there so you don't have to. We not only show you the skill set needed to safely fly this type of aircraft but also to acquire the decision making skill set needed to choose the best outcome in standard and non-standard scenarios. You already know how to fly and we show you how to apply those skills with a new set of insights to make you a skilled decision maker with smooth operating skills applicable to the Searey.
You have to come ready for this type of training. We don't have the time to spend polishing poor flying habits back into the shine needed to fly Experimental aircraft. You must be current, qualified and rated. This means you've flown in the last 90 days and have your 3 takeoff and landings with a Bi-annual Flight Review. This also means that you are a holder of the Category and Class ratings required of Airplane Single Engine Land and Sea - ASEL and ASES. We can help you if you're not there yet, but we don't recommend the Searey as the platform for obtaining currency and qualification for primary students.
Common Tips1- Seek Instruction from an Certified Instructor familiar with Searey aircraft. There are very few of us. Don't except inexperienced instructors offering to teach you. They'll just be taking you for a ride. We've seen this too many times...
2- Get Rated, Current and Qualified for the operations in this category. Forget the shortcuts concerning not needing a particular rating to fly Seareys. This is time and money well spent versus the cost of your first repair bill.
3- The manufacturer Progressive Aerodyne, who we have worked with extensively for many years, is in the business of manufacture and sales, not instruction. They often refer clients to us because no one on their staff is a certified Flight Instructor. Get dual instruction from a Certified Instructor familiar with Searey aircraft.
4- Get Insurance for your aircraft and yourself. Look into the finer details and legal aspects of flying Experimental aircraft - especially the Amphibious types - are and learn about the nearly non-existent markets for insuring these machines and their passengers. These insurers will require a specific amount of dual instruction before covering your aircraft.
5- Light Sport as a category of airman or aircraft doesn't mean minimal qualification or skill. If you haven't flown much or it's been a while or if you have a medical condition that would otherwise disqualify you from obtaining a medical certificate OR lack a skill set required to safely fly Experimental aircraft then the Searey is not for you - yet. Learn to know your limitations ahead of time away from Experimental amphibian aircraft. Trying to find a crack in the regulations that allows you to get around being a responsible, safe pilot is stupid. Experimental amphibian aircraft are more un-forgiving of carelessness and irresponsibility than anything else you have ever been around. Prevent your death by obtaining proper instruction from CaptainSpeak and SeareyTraining.com!
